AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Former football coach and current U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville is throwing his hat into the ring for Alabama’s governor race next year. He revealed his plans during an appearance on "The Will Cain Show" on Fox News.

“I’m a coach, a leader, and I’m ready to grow Alabama,” Tuberville declared. His focus includes improving education and boosting manufacturing in the state, along with tackling illegal immigration.

This announcement comes as Alabama’s current governor, Kay Ivey, cannot run again due to term limits. Tuberville’s ties to Auburn are strong; he made the announcement at a local barbecue restaurant, where family and friends celebrated alongside him, sporting "Coach" hats in Auburn’s colors.

When asked about his educational plans, Tuberville emphasized the importance of K-12 education but was vague on specifics. He called for more pressure on school administrators to improve student outcomes and mentioned the need for better funding. He supports the state’s new school voucher program but believes it can be enhanced. “We need to focus on the basics—if you can’t read or write, how can you learn anything?” he said.

Tuberville is no stranger to political life. He transitioned from being a football coach—a tenure that included eight bowl appearances at Auburn—into politics, winning his Senate seat in 2020. He positioned himself as a political outsider, closely aligning with former President Donald Trump. During the primaries, he defeated former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a significant political figure in Alabama for years.

In his time in the Senate, Tuberville has consistently backed Trump’s policies, even drawing criticism for blocking military promotions in protest of Pentagon policies supporting abortion access for service members.

Critics like Doug Jones, Tuberville’s former opponent, label his performance as lacking and state that he hasn’t effectively represented Alabama in significant ways. “He’s been an embarrassment,” Jones said, emphasizing the lack of accomplishments during Tuberville’s tenure.

Historically, Alabama has seen a strong connection between sports and politics, with figures like Tuberville using their fame to gain political traction. Polls show that many voters support Tuberville’s candidacy, with experts saying his name recognition and connections will deter other potential candidates.

His residency is also under scrutiny. The Alabama Constitution demands that governors be residents for seven years before the election. While Tuberville formally registered to vote in Alabama in 2019 after living in Florida, his past has raised questions. He insists that Auburn is his true home, despite owning a $4 million beach house in Florida.

Alabama Democrats are planning to challenge his residency legally, but Tuberville remains confident. “This is my home,” he stated, referring to his life in Auburn.
