United Nations: A senior Indian diplomat recently met with UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock to discuss key global issues. Their talk focused on reformed multilateralism and the ongoing fight against terrorism, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Ambassador Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the MEA, had this “productive meeting” with Baerbock before her upcoming visit to India next week. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared details of their conversations about peace, security, and development through a post on X.
During her trip, Baerbock will engage in several bilateral talks with Indian officials and meet with the UN country team led by UN Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner.
In addition to meeting Baerbock, George also connected with Alexandre Zouev, the Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism. They discussed India’s strong collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism. Zouev expressed gratitude towards India for its ongoing contributions to global counter-terrorism efforts.
This visit comes at a critical time. Recent statistics show that global terrorism incidents rose by about 10% in 2022, highlighting the urgency of international cooperation in security matters. Experts emphasize that nations need to work closely to combat these threats, particularly in regions facing increased instability.
Earlier in the week, George also met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He stressed India’s dedication to multilateralism and advocated for broader representation within the UN Security Council, especially for countries in the Global South.
This ongoing dialogue reflects a significant shift in global diplomacy. As nations increasingly recognize the interconnectedness of their challenges, discussions like these will shape future strategies for combating terrorism and fostering cooperation.
