Seoul National University: Unlocking Opportunities for Global Talent and International Research Collaboration

Seoul National University is making a significant move to attract global talent and promote international research. This initiative comes in response to stricter regulations on international students that arose during the Trump administration, which has led many talented individuals to leave the U.S.

Recently, the university announced an expansion of its international research program. Previously limited to graduate students in the BK21 (Brain Korea 21) project, it will now welcome graduate students from other programs starting in the second half of this year. Additionally, a new effort will focus on forming international research teams centered around postdoctoral researchers. Since March, the university has also launched a fellowship program aimed at attracting PhD graduates from abroad.

Yoo Hong-rim, the university president, spoke at a workshop celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Minnesota project. He noted, “Global research conditions have become challenging, but we will actively enhance international cooperation and attract foreign talents.”

The Minnesota project was a significant initiative funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development from 1954 to 1962, just after the Korean War. It aimed to retrain faculty members and create opportunities for study abroad, laying the groundwork for the university’s growth.

This current push for international collaboration reflects a broader trend. According to a recent survey by the Institute of International Education, the number of international students in the U.S. has dropped by 43% since 2019. This highlights the importance of universities like Seoul National University in creating welcoming environments for global talents.
