The Bulldog Market, launched in 2021 at Alabama A&M University, tackles food scarcity among students. Managed by the Service and Learning Department and supported by AmeriCorps VISTA, it allows students to pick up three free items per visit.
“Every student deserves access to food,” says Monica Clarke, the Service and Learning Coordinator. “We’re here to help those struggling with food insecurity so they can thrive in their studies and personal lives.”
Now, over 200 students utilize the Market daily. Beyond groceries, it also offers personal care items, school supplies, and clothing. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that 82% of undergraduates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) depend on federal financial aid. Many face food insecurity, nearly double the national average. This reality resonates at AAMU, making the Market a vital resource for students.
Students express how the Market eases their financial stress. Junior Albany Rios remarks, “As a college student, it’s tough to afford everything. The Bulldog Market makes getting necessary food and supplies hassle-free.” Sophomore Christion Clark adds, “It’s reassuring to know the University supports us with free essentials, letting me focus on my studies instead of worrying about basics.” Freshman William Shelton appreciates the variety, stating, “The Bulldog Market offers choices that aren’t typical for free items.”
Located in the McCaleb and McIntosh Building, the Market is open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On Fridays, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., it specifically aids students facing homelessness or those who have aged out of social services. The operation is supported by AmeriCorps staff, a graduate assistant, and work-study students.
To keep the shelves stocked, the Market relies on community donations. Clarke emphasizes the importance of these contributions: “We need ongoing support to ensure we can help every student who depends on us.” Donations are accepted Monday to Friday, with appointments preferred, especially on Fridays.
According to recent surveys, the demand for food assistance on college campuses is growing. Many students face rising living costs, making these services crucial. Initiatives like the Bulldog Market not only provide immediate relief but also foster a supportive environment for students to succeed. By addressing food insecurity, the Market plays a key role in preserving educational equity.
