Seth Rogen recently shared intriguing insights about his new show, The Studio, during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The Apple TV+ series is a satirical look at Hollywood through Rogen’s character, Matt Remick, who runs a movie studio in today’s world.

In the show, Matt is passionate about films but faces a dilemma. He loves movies and the creative process, but often has to make decisions that compromise the art for commercial gain. Rogen explained, “He loves directors and actors, but he constantly disappoints them to keep his job.” This struggle between artistic passion and the realities of business is central to the series.
Colbert turned the conversation to a striking moment from Rogen’s earlier career. He asked if an executive had ever told him that their job felt like ruining movies. Rogen confirmed this had happened. During a meeting with Steve Asbell, now the president of 20th Century Studios, Rogen was told, “I got into this because I love movies, and now it’s my job to ruin them.” This candid remark resonated with Rogen and inspired themes in The Studio.
Interestingly, Rogen noted that executives have reacted to the show. He mentioned, “I’ve been yelled at three times in one week for how I portrayed them.” Some were amused, while others were not so happy.
A particular incident at the Golden Globes influenced one episode of the series. Rogen recalled seeing an executive crying at a party after a film they worked on won an award. When they approached him, he revealed it was not tears of joy but because he hadn’t been thanked in the acceptance speech. This real-life experience sparked an episode centered on the importance of recognition in Hollywood.
Rogen also shared that some people mistakenly think they’re depicted in the show. “I got a call from an executive who was moved, saying it reflected his story,” he said. The truth was, it wasn’t based on him at all.
The Studio features a stellar cast and new episodes stream every Wednesday on Apple TV+. The blend of humor and reality in this series reflects the complexities of the film industry, inviting audiences to ponder the balance between art and commerce that professionals deal with every day.
