In South Korea, a shocking incident occurred when a fighter jet accidentally dropped eight bombs in a civilian area during a military drill. This mishap injured seven people, four of whom are in serious condition.
The incident took place around 10:04 AM local time in Pocheon, a city near the North Korean border. Only one of the bombs detonated, while the others remained unexploded. Local authorities have evacuated residents and are working to dispose of the remaining bombs safely.
It’s uncommon for shells from military exercises to cause injuries, but this incident was different. Reports indicate that two individuals suffered serious injuries, including fractures to their necks and shoulders. One 60-year-old driver was injured by shrapnel. He described the moment of the explosion, recalling, “I was driving when I heard a ‘bang.’ When I woke up, I was in an ambulance.”
The South Korean Air Force explained that their KF-16 jet unexpectedly released eight MK-82 bombs outside the designated firing range. They are currently investigating the matter and have apologized for the damage, promising compensation for those affected.
Damage was not limited to injuries; buildings, including a church and nearby homes, were also affected. Local media shared images showing shattered windows and a damaged roof. A resident who felt the explosion described it as sounding “like a thunderclap,” shaking their home.
The director of a local senior care center reported that while no seniors were injured, the explosion frightened them so much that all were sent home. One of the staff members was taken to the hospital due to injuries from shattered glass.
This military exercise was part of a joint drill with US forces, highlighting ongoing tensions and military preparedness in the region. South Korea and the US plan to conduct more combined drills soon, especially given their concerns about the strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia.
In a similar incident in 2022 during another joint drill, a malfunctioning missile crashed on a golf course, creating panic but thankfully not causing any injuries. These events remind us of the risks involved in military activities and the need for safety precautions, especially when civilians are nearby.
