The Environment and Climate Change Canada warning emphasizes the risks for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and those with chronic conditions. Symptoms of cold exposure can include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain, and numbness in extremities. It’s crucial to dress warmly and stay informed about potential frostbite, which can occur in just minutes. People are also advised to stock emergency supplies, like blankets and jumper cables, in their vehicles.
Schools Closed Today
Due to the storm, all elementary, high school, and post-secondary institutions in the affected regions were closed Monday. Major school boards, including the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Upper Grand District School Board, announced the closures on Sunday. Universities like Wilfrid Laurier and the University of Waterloo also halted classes.
The storm brought significant snowfall, with totals reaching 10 to 20 cm, and the Greater Toronto Area even saw amounts up to 60 cm. This extreme weather led to over half of flights being canceled at Pearson International Airport, highlighting the travel disruptions many faced.
Traffic Troubles
The snowstorm did not only affect schools but also created hazardous road conditions. The Ontario Provincial Police reported multiple collisions on Highway 401, urging drivers to slow down and adapt to the weather. The OPP’s Sgt. Ed Sanchuk emphasized the importance of patience and attention while driving, advising against passing snowplows, which are crucial for road safety during storms. In the past 24 hours, Waterloo Regional Police responded to 25 collisions, some resulting in minor injuries.
Parking Restrictions
In response to the heavy snowfall, winter parking bans have been enacted in Guelph, Kitchener, and Cambridge, with Guelph’s ban starting at 7 a.m. Sunday. These restrictions are necessary to facilitate snow removal efforts, which prioritize roads and bike lanes. The penalties for violating these bans can be steep, with fines up to $100 in Kitchener.
