Freezing temperatures have hit the Midwest as a polar vortex sweeps through the Rockies and Northern Plains. This follows severe storms that caused flooding in the Eastern U.S., claiming at least 13 lives.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings for dangerously cold conditions. Wind chills in North Dakota have plummeted to minus 60°F, and parts of Montana have seen temperatures drop to minus 50°F. The temperatures are expected to dip even more on Tuesday.
Extreme cold warnings cover an area from the Canadian border down to Oklahoma and Texas. This Arctic air is among the coldest to reach the U.S. this winter.
Meanwhile, Kentucky is reeling from severe flooding, which has led to 11 confirmed deaths so far. Governor Andy Beshear mentioned that nine of these fatalities were due to the floods, and two deaths were linked to car accidents during the storm. The storms brought up to six inches of rain, inundating homes and causing mudslides.
In Virginia and West Virginia, floodwaters have made roads impassable, with several people still unaccounted for. The governor of West Virginia is seeking federal assistance for the 13 counties affected by these floods.
In Nebraska, a state trooper tragically lost their life while responding to a crash caused by winter weather conditions. Snow and ice have made travel hazardous in many states, with officials urging caution.
Detroit has also faced challenges as a water main burst, flooding a neighborhood. Emergency crews have been assisting residents in the affected area. Mayor Mike Duggan advised those impacted to stay safe and shelter in place if they have power.
As the cold snap continues, officials are advising people to dress warmly and limit outdoor exposure to prevent frostbite, which can occur within minutes in these extreme temperatures. In North Dakota, the cold is expected to reduce oil production significantly, highlighting the broader impact of these weather conditions.
Local animal shelters are also feeling the strain of the cold, with many urging pet owners to bring animals inside to protect them from the frigid temperatures. At the Dakota Zoo, staff are working to ensure animals remain warm and safe despite the harsh weather.
