Severe Cold Wave Disrupts Daily Life in Northern Regions: What You Need to Know

Rangpur is currently experiencing a cold wave, disrupting daily life for many residents. The temperatures have remained low, with minimums around 11.2 degrees Celsius. Even though there’s been a slight rise in maximum temperatures, the chill continues to make things uncomfortable.

Cold winds from the northwest have kept the sky partly cloudy and misty. Many people are staying indoors, which has impacted local businesses and activities. The situation is especially tough for those living in rural areas along the Brahmaputra basin, where conditions are precarious due to the cold.

Rangpur Meteorological Office’s Md Mostafizar Rahman noted that while the minimum temperatures have fluctuated just a little, the overall cold feel remains. The city recorded a low of 11.2 degrees, down from 12.2 degrees the previous day. In other locations like Tetulia and Dinajpur, similarly low temperatures were reported.

The cold isn’t just uncomfortable; it’s also affecting health. Hospitals are seeing a rise in patients suffering from coughs, fever, and asthma. Dr. Md Gausul Azim Chowdhury, the Rangpur divisional health director, assured that there are enough medicines to address these issues, and steps are being taken to treat cold-related illnesses effectively.

In response to the harsh conditions, local authorities, NGOs, and community organizations are actively providing warm clothing. Around 7,500 blankets and funds for purchasing additional warm clothes are being distributed across Rangpur and neighboring regions. This is crucial for the many families in vulnerable situations.

Recent data highlights that such cold spells are not just weather anomalies. According to a study by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the frequency of severe cold waves has increased over the past decade, affecting regions like the northern districts of Rangpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha more intensively.

Social media reactions reveal growing concern for the vulnerable populations impacted by these conditions. Many users have taken to platforms like Twitter to urge for more support and awareness regarding health services and aid distribution. This sentiment underscores the importance of community solidarity during tough times.

As we look at the bigger picture, it’s clear that weather patterns are changing. The effects of climate change are becoming more visible, and regions that once had milder winters are now facing harsher climates. It’s a reminder that we need to prepare and adapt to these evolving challenges.
