Severe weather is on the horizon for the Chicago area, with tornadoes possible tonight. A Tornado Warning had been issued for Winnebago County but has now expired. However, a Tornado Watch remains in effect for several counties, including Cook and DuPage, until midnight. In Indiana, the watch is active for La Porte until 4 a.m. EDT.
Additionally, a Flood Watch is in place for multiple counties, including Cook and Kane, until early Wednesday morning. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are also active for Lake County and other regions until late tonight.
The greatest chance for severe storms is from 6 p.m. to midnight. Experts classify the risk levels, with the city and northern suburbs facing a moderate threat. The focus will be on large hail and tornado activity, especially north of I-90.
According to the National Weather Service, storms will likely reach McHenry and DeKalb counties by 8:30 p.m., bringing severe conditions right away. Besides tornadoes and hail, residents should be alert for damaging winds and flash flooding as well.
What to Do During a Tornado Warning
If a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter immediately. Preferably, go to the lowest level of your home or a basement. If that’s not possible, choose an interior room away from windows, like a bathroom or closet. Don’t forget your pets if time allows!
If you’re caught outdoors, find a sturdy building for shelter. Avoid sheds and mobile homes as they are unsafe. While driving, head to the nearest shelter. If that’s not possible, lie low in your vehicle or seek shelter in a ditch.
Bring essentials like a flashlight, water, and your phone into your safe space. Keeping up with weather alerts via a radio will also help you stay informed.
