Severe Weather Alert: Prepare for Heavy Rainfall and Flash Floods!

Warnings for heavy rain and flash floods have been issued for many regions of Bangladesh, especially in the Chattogram division. This follows a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal, which has disrupted daily life and travel in the area.

Passenger services on 11 coastal routes—including those to Bhola, Barguna, and Patuakhali—were suspended. This left many people stranded and facing challenges in their daily activities. There’s also a warning for landslides in hill districts and possible water buildup in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Dhaka experienced its heaviest rainfall of the year, with 206 millimeters recorded. Khepupara in Barishal registered the most rainfall in the country during that same period, receiving 95 millimeters.

Meteorologists predict continued heavy rainfall across several divisions, including Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Sylhet, for the next 48 hours. The threat of flooding in low-lying areas is significant, especially near the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia, and Feni rivers, which have shown increased water levels.

Experts from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department have pointed out the importance of preparedness. Shahnaz Sultana, a meteorologist, emphasizes that communities should be informed about potential flooding risks, especially given the ongoing heavy rains.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the water levels of key rivers may exceed safe levels, affecting vulnerable areas. Rivers like the Teesta and various coastal rivers are also expected to flow above warning levels, raising concerns about temporary flooding in locations such as Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari.

This weather situation is not just a local concern; it echoes similar events from previous years. For instance, a comparable weather pattern in 2018 led to significant flooding across many regions, affecting thousands. Historical data shows that increased rainfall due to climate change has heightened the frequency of such weather events in Bangladesh.

The social media response to the current situation highlights local frustrations as communities share their experiences. Many residents are expressing their woes, especially given that the heavy rains coincided with cultural celebrations like Durga Puja, leaving attendance at events low in Barishal.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for community leaders and residents alike to stay updated. The situation calls for awareness, preparedness, and community support to navigate these challenges effectively.
