Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a weather alert for Airdrie and Crossfield. This week, winter is making a comeback in Alberta. From Wednesday night through Friday, expect tricky travel conditions across central Alberta.
The weather will start changing Wednesday evening, with heavy, wet snow hitting areas like Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, and Edson. By Thursday morning, central regions, including Edmonton, will likely see increasing snowfall. Places like Red Deer could experience rain mixed with freezing rain, eventually turning to snow by the afternoon.
Forecasts predict a snowfall of 5 to 20 cm by Friday morning in central Alberta. Areas closer to the Rocky Mountains may see even higher totals, up to 25 cm near Grande Prairie.
Despite warm temperatures early in the week, the ECCC believes snow totals will be moderate, given the variability in snowfall rates.
In Airdrie, highs will hover around freezing, with overnight lows dipping well below. Residents should be prepared for rain or snow on Wednesday and Thursday. This freeze-thaw cycle can create slushy roads during the day and icy patches at night, especially during early morning commutes.
It’s important to stay informed about changing weather conditions. According to a recent survey by Weather Network, Canada’s winter weather can significantly impact travel plans, with about 60% of Canadians adjusting their schedules due to snow-related issues. Be cautious on the roads, and allow extra time for your travels.
For the latest updates on local weather, check the ECCC website or follow reliable news sources for timely alerts. Stay safe and prepare for the winter conditions ahead!
