SGMC Health Honored Nationally for Excellence in Stroke Treatment: What It Means for Valdosta Community

SGMC Health in Valdosta has received high praise from the American Heart Association for its outstanding stroke treatment. For 12 years in a row, the health center has won the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award.

As the only accredited primary stroke center in the area, SGMC Health sets a high bar for quality care. Their focus includes treating stroke patients with Type 2 diabetes, who are at greater risk for complications. By utilizing the latest research, they aim to save lives and shorten the time it takes for patients to recover.

Notably, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and is a major reason for long-term disability. When a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts, it deprives the brain of oxygen and nutrients. The quicker a stroke is recognized and treated, the better the chances of survival and recovery.

“This ongoing recognition shows the hard work and dedication of our entire team,” said William Pellow, SGMC Health’s stroke coordinator. “We want our community to recognize the signs of a stroke and act quickly. Time is crucial, and early intervention can save lives.”

To help people remember the signs of a stroke, SGMC Health encourages using the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T:

• Balance problems
• Eyesight changes
• Facial drooping
• Arm weakness
• Speech difficulty
• Time to call 911

Get With The Guidelines is a program from the American Heart Association aimed at improving care in hospitals across the country. This initiative aligns treatment with the most current evidence, ensuring patients receive the best care possible.

According to a recent study, hospitals participating in this program have reported significant decreases in mortality rates and improved recovery times. This shows how vital it is for healthcare facilities to stay updated with the latest practices in stroke treatment.
