MEXICO CITY — It was a wild four days for Shane van Gisbergen, but it ended on a high note. He won the first Cup race held at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, marking a turning point in his rocky season.
Struggling at the bottom of the NASCAR Cup Series standings, van Gisbergen’s big win came despite his team facing travel issues that left them short-staffed for practice. He credited the crew for rallying together. "Everyone dug deep, and we came up with a plan," he said, marveling at how they had only a skeleton crew around them.
Victory didn’t come without challenges. Van Gisbergen battled illness on race day, feeling "pretty rubbish" at times. Yet, he wasn’t deterred. He led 60 of the 100 laps, and his 16.567-second margin of victory was the largest in nearly 16 years. It’s important to note that road racing fans weren’t too surprised by his performance. He has already made a name for himself as a formidable road racer, winning in his first Cup start in Chicago last year.
During the race, he experienced discomfort, especially early on, but medication helped him power through. “I had to manage myself,” he said, reflecting on how he needed to stay calm and focused.
His crew chief, Stephen Doran, wasn’t overly worried about van Gisbergen’s health. Instead, he praised the driver’s unique ability to thrive under pressure, especially at challenging tracks. "It’s amazing to watch him race,” Doran commented.
Van Gisbergen’s teammate, Daniel Suarez, had his own struggles, finishing 19th despite having won an Xfinity Series race the day before. The disparity in their cars and race strategies limited his chances against van Gisbergen.
With this victory, van Gisbergen has now positioned himself for the playoffs, showing steady improvement throughout the season. Despite only having one top 20 finish in the first ten oval races, he earned three in the last four leading up to Mexico City.
As he celebrated, van Gisbergen stated, "I’m not just here to run last on the ovals. I want to keep improving." His drive and determination are clear indicators of his commitment to succeed in NASCAR.
Even after the hard race, he had no plans to rest. Instead, he joked about mixing energy drinks with celebratory drinks. "I’m ready to enjoy this win!" he laughed.
This victory highlights the resilience of van Gisbergen, turning a challenging season into one filled with potential and hope for the future.
