Shedeur Sanders Embraces Browns Rookie Minicamp: Extra Throws and a Vision for the Future

Two weeks after Shedeur Sanders faced the NFL Draft, he stepped onto the field as a Cleveland Brown at the team’s rookie minicamp. He was eager to prove himself.

"My focus isn’t on proving others wrong; it’s about proving myself right," Sanders said. His enthusiasm was clear as he wrapped up his first media session.

When he received the call from Browns general manager Andrew Berry, he celebrated by jumping into a pool. Now, he’s diving into the playbook to kickstart his professional journey.

Sanders is concentrating on learning and fitting into his new team. He’s determined to show the Browns they made the right choice by selecting him. "I don’t dwell on the draft day; I focus on practice today," he stated.

Despite getting first and second-round grades from experts, Sanders was picked in the fifth round as the Browns traded up to select him. He’s the team’s seventh rookie and second quarterback this year.

At the minicamp, the Browns put him in action right away. Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel led the drills while Sanders followed closely, participating in the early stages of what is projected to be a competitive quarterback battle this summer, alongside veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett.

With nearly 2.2 million Instagram followers, Sanders is well-known. His father, Deion Sanders, is a Pro Football Hall of Famer and was his college coach. Even Tom Brady reached out after the draft to encourage him. "Brady was a late-round pick too, so my story could be similar," Sanders said.

Though rookies couldn’t join the team until recently, Sanders arrived in Ohio soon after the draft. He worked out at a local training facility and visited a Cleveland high school to inspire students. He values connecting with young people, not for attention, but to make a meaningful impact.

"You appreciate life and opportunities," he explained, seeing his draft wait as just a blip on his radar. "As a quarterback, you can’t dwell on the past. When it’s crunch time, you need to focus and seize your moment."

The competition for starting positions will ramp up soon, with coach Kevin Stefanski emphasizing that all quarterbacks will get a fair chance to shine. The dynamics in the quarterback room mirror Sanders’ draft experience: full of scrutiny and potential surprises.

"It’s a day-by-day process for me," he said. "I focus on perfecting what I can and being a good teammate. I appreciate this opportunity and am excited to be here."

During practice, Sanders and another receiver, Jabre Barber, were the last to leave the field, taking extra time to sharpen their skills. After the minicamp, they join veterans in formal training, with OTAs starting at the end of May.

This determination reflects a broader trend in sports, where late-round picks often turn into stars. According to a recent study by Pro Football Focus, nearly 25% of late-round selections from the past decade become key contributors, showcasing that talent can emerge from unexpected places.
