Shedeur Sanders is set to make his NFL debut as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Head coach Kevin Stefanski shared this news on Wednesday, emphasizing that Sanders will take all first-team reps leading up to the game. This preparation is key to making him comfortable and ready for the challenge ahead.
Stefanski noted how important it is for players to feel confident in their roles. “You want to ensure all the concepts are things he’s comfortable with,” he said. Having spent time with Sanders during training, Stefanski has a good understanding of what plays best suit the rookie.
Meanwhile, QB Dillon Gabriel is still in concussion protocol after showing symptoms during halftime of the Week 11 game against the Ravens. Although he remains on the mend, Stefanski mentioned that Gabriel is steadily improving.
In that Week 11 matchup, Sanders stepped in for Gabriel after halftime. His performance was shaky, completing just 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards, along with one interception. Reflecting on his experience, Sanders admitted that he didn’t play his best but sees it as an opportunity to grow. “We need to look at a lot of things during the week and just get comfortable,” he explained.
Sanders has been the backup since Week 6, following Joe Flacco’s departure. Gabriel started the previous six games, showing some promise as the main QB.
Before his appearance against the Ravens, Sanders hadn’t played in a regular-season game, having last showcased his skills in the preseason. His earlier games included a solid start against the Panthers and time in the third and fourth quarters against the Rams.
Throughout his time preparing, Sanders dedicated himself to extra practice sessions, referred to as “hungry dogs” periods, which allowed him to get comfortable with the offense and improve his game. “I feel fulfilled when I practice and see what it’s like out there. I know I’m made for it,” he stated, showing enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge.
