Browns General Manager Andrew Berry recently shared that the team is okay with keeping four quarterbacks on their 53-player roster. Shedeur Sanders had a rough outing in the preseason game against the Rams, but he still believes he can secure a spot.
In that game, Sanders completed just 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards and took five sacks. The Browns switched to Tyler Huntley, their fifth quarterback, with just over two minutes left. Huntley managed a six-play drive that resulted in a game-winning field goal, something Sanders would have loved to do.
Reflecting on his performance, Sanders said, “You wish you could go back and change things. In the moment, you want to be that leader out there. Small mistakes can be frustrating, but that’s part of wanting to make a difference on your team.”
Sanders showed promise in his first preseason game against the Panthers but missed the second due to a sore shoulder. Overall, he ended the preseason with 17 of 29 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns. “Every day is a new day,” he added. “I’m grateful for the experience and the lessons learned.”
Historically, football teams have often rotated quarterbacks during preseason to assess talent. A look back at NFL trends shows that many successful teams have established a strong number two and three qb to ensure depth and adaptability. According to a survey by the NFL Players Association, about 70% of players believe that preseason games help them adjust to the speed of the regular season.
