WICHITA FALLS, Texas – On May 2, 2025, Sheppard Air Force Base wrapped up its first-ever food drive, “Feds Feed Families.” Partnering with the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank, the base aimed to tackle hunger in the community.
This initiative was crucial, as donations to food banks often drop in the early months of the year after the holiday season. David O’Neil, the CEO of the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the contributions.
“Our base collected 5,712 pounds of food, helping over 39,000 individuals facing hunger,” O’Neil said. “We are incredibly thankful for this support.”
The event also featured a friendly competition among squadrons. They not only aimed to collect the most food but also to create the best-decorated food pallets. The 82nd Training Support Squadron not only took home the trophy for the most donations but also won for the best decorations. “Bragging rights matter here,” O’Neil noted. “This win will be remembered for a long time.”
Looking ahead, O’Neil believes next year’s drive will be even bigger. Brigadier General Paul Filcek also expressed optimism about future efforts, highlighting the enthusiasm and competitive spirit of the personnel.
Interestingly, local food banks play a vital role in the community. According to Feeding America, over 35 million people faced food insecurity in 2021, a number that can rise during challenging economic times. Efforts like "Feds Feed Families" are essential to combat this issue and raise awareness.
As community members engage in similar initiatives, they not only provide food but also build connections and foster a spirit of cooperation. The response from military families shows a strong commitment to helping those in need.
With the success of this year’s food drive, it’s clear that teamwork can make a significant impact. Next year promises even more exciting challenges and contributions.
