Shields’s Stellar Performance Powers Wheeling University Softball to Thrilling Split Against Salem

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Softball team faced Salem University for their last non-conference doubleheader of the season. It was an exciting night with a mix of highs and lows. The Cardinals lost the first game 9-3 but bounced back in the second game, winning 4-3 in a thrilling walk-off finish.

Game One Recap

In the first match, the Cardinals started strong. Pitcher Maria Clark allowed just one runner in the first inning, thanks to a quick play by catcher Denise Carrillo. However, Salem struck first, scoring three runs in the second and adding three more in the fourth, leading 6-0.

Wheeling finally broke through in the fourth inning. Amber Morgan hit a double to start the inning, and Maria Clark later moved her to third. Kaylin Shields brought her home with an RBI single, making it 6-1. Unfortunately, Salem reclaimed the momentum with two more runs in the fifth.

Despite a late-game effort, Wheeling couldn’t come back from a 9-2 deficit. Keke Warrix started the seventh with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kearstin Monday, but the game ended 9-3. Ava Kresak led the offense with a double and an RBI.

Game Two Recap

The second game was a different story. Kaylin Shields took the mound and delivered an excellent performance, striking out a career-high 10 batters. She allowed just one run early but kept Salem scoreless for the next five innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals found their rhythm. Chyla Miller walked and was driven home by an RBI triple from Ava Kresak. Amber Morgan’s grounder to short brought in another run, giving Wheeling a 2-1 lead.

As the game neared its end, Keke Warrix’s speed on base helped score another run through a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 3-1. However, Salem managed to tie the game in the seventh, putting pressure back on Wheeling.

With just one out left, Brooklyn Sanders hit a double, bringing Denise Carrillo in as a pinch runner. Maria Clark’s sacrifice bunt set the stage for Kaylin Shields, who hit a walk-off RBI double, sealing the game at 4-3 for Wheeling.

Shields not only excelled as a pitcher, but she also shined at the plate, finishing with two hits, including the game-winner. Teammates Brooklyn Sanders also contributed with two hits and Ava Kresak impressed with an RBI triple.
