Shining a Light on Climate Connections: Why Hope and Action Won’t Fade Away

A year ago, we were excited to have Bill McKibben, a leading voice in climate advocacy, at our annual ClimateFEST in Missoula. Since then, the landscape of clean energy has faced significant challenges. Recent policies have made it tougher for everyday Americans to access affordable solar solutions, pulling back on clean energy initiatives and reducing support for vital agencies like NOAA, which we rely on for climate science.

As we prepare for this year’s ClimateFEST on September 27 and the following events in Climate Solutions Week, McKibben’s message is more relevant than ever. He highlighted the impressive growth of solar energy, which is now the most affordable form of energy worldwide. For example, in China, they installed about 100 solar panels every second. Here in the U.S., solar power accounted for 81% of new energy capacity added in 2024. McKibben also discusses this in his latest book, Here Comes the Sun, which we highly recommend.

This surge in solar energy is promising for both our climate and our communities. To celebrate this, we’ll join in the international Sun Day festivities on September 21. With numerous events planned, we are eager to show how much Missoula values solar energy. Whether you can attend or not, we invite you to share selfies in front of local solar installations to showcase our community’s support.

In another inspiring story, 22 young people, including 10 from Montana, took legal action against the Trump administration, claiming their constitutional rights were violated by fossil fuel policies. This follows the significant Held v. Montana ruling that affirmed our right to a stable climate. These young leaders are bravely pushing the climate conversation forward in the courts.

This year’s ClimateFEST, previously known as the Climate and Clean Energy Expo, will take place on September 27 from 10 AM to 2 PM at Caras Park. We’re excited to have over 30 local organizations participating, along with interactive demos and activities for families.

With Climate Solutions Week just around the corner, there’s opportunity to discover various climate solutions that excite you. From hands-on workshops to community bike rides, there’s something for everyone.

We understand these times can feel overwhelming. However, as we like to remind ourselves at Climate Smart Missoula, “hope is a verb.” By showing up and taking action, we collectively create the world we want to see. McKibben notes in his book that we have a unique opportunity to provide affordable energy while addressing climate change—a chance for global unity.

Whether through solar or other climate solutions, let’s come together to energize the movement for our shared future.
