Shining a Light on the Unsung Heroes: Why the Fairfield University Ground Crew Deserves More Recognition

While we call it the spring semester, the weather can still feel very much like winter. When students return to Fairfield University in mid-January, they often find a snowy landscape. The sidewalks may be icy, and snow piles can reach surprising heights, making it tricky to get around. Fortunately, our dedicated grounds crew works hard to keep pathways clear and safe for everyone.

Coming from Massachusetts, I know how unpredictable winter weather can be. Just before the end of winter break, a major blizzard swept through New England. I was worried about getting back to campus, especially as a sophomore without a car. Thankfully, the university allowed some students to return early at no extra cost. This meant my parents could safely drive me back before the worst of the storm hit.

With most students still on break, the campus was quiet, except for the sounds of the grounds crew hard at work. They were salting and plowing even before the snow started to accumulate. I felt relieved walking to the Media Center for dinner, knowing I wouldn’t have to dodge icy patches or deep snowdrifts. The crew prepares ahead of time for any expected weather, ensuring they are ready when conditions worsen.

“Fairfield handles storm preparation well,” sophomore Raquel Deleo noted. “They have plows ready even before it starts snowing, and they take care of any ice afterward too.”

No matter the time of day or night, the grounds crew is always there, ensuring students can move around campus safely. Whether I’m walking back to my dorm late from the library or heading to morning practice, I know they’re looking out for us.

A member of the Women’s Rowing team, Raquel often makes the chilly walk from her dorm to early morning practices. She observed one day after a storm, “On my way back from the erg room, I saw a landscaper putting down ice melt to keep the paths safe.”

The last snowfall we had around Valentine’s Day may seem like a thing of the past, but the grounds crew still works diligently to prevent icy conditions. Even with the warmer weather we recently enjoyed, like a sunny Sunday reaching 45 degrees, they remain vigilant.

I live in Avery Dulles Hall, and there’s a spot near the entrance that usually freezes over. I’ve never passed by that spot without seeing it freshly salted.

Junior Christian Sehlmeyer, who lives in the townhouses, shared his appreciation as well. “Every time there’s a winter storm, they shovel our porches and steps. It’s one less thing we have to worry about.”

Though they might not always get the recognition they deserve, the Fairfield University grounds crew plays a crucial role in keeping our campus safe during winter months.

With so many demands on students—like classes, internships, and clubs—we are fortunate we don’t have to worry about clearing snow or ice ourselves. The hard work of the grounds crew allows us to focus on our studies and enjoy campus life, even when winter storms hit.

“I’m really grateful for how the workers clear paths early so I can safely get to practice,” Raquel added.
