On November 10, Coach Mark “Mac” Maciejewski announced his retirement plans, intending to step down as head football coach at Shippensburg University after the 2025 season. Maciejewski has spent an impressive 15 years as head coach, contributing to a total of 32 years at his alma mater. He holds the record as the longest-serving head football coach in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Over his tenure, Maciejewski has achieved notable successes, including an 85-61 record in 13 competitive seasons. He ranks second in coaching wins at Shippensburg, a testament to his leadership and dedication.
Reflecting on his career, Maciejewski shared, “It has been a complete honor to have spent 32 years in the Shippensburg University Football Family. Stepping away is not a decision made lightly, but I am ready for the next chapter with my family.” He emphasized the vital support of his wife, Tricia, throughout his journey.
Under Maciejewski’s leadership, the Shippensburg football team has seen remarkable achievements, including a streak of eight consecutive winning seasons, which ties the school record set from 1950-57. His teams have broken more than 200 school records, marking a transformative era for the program.
In 2017, he was recognized as the AFCA Division II Region 1 Coach of the Year, leading the team to a notable 10-2 season and its sixth NCAA postseason appearance. Earlier, in 2012, he earned the same award after guiding the team to an 11-2 record, further solidifying his reputation.
Maciejewski’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Shippensburg. After gaining experience at James Madison and Saint Francis, he returned to coach the SU secondary and later moved up the ranks. His career as a player also shines—he was a Defensive Lineman in the SU Athletics Hall of Fame from 1989-92, achieving All-PSAC First Team honors for three consecutive years.
Born in Punxsutawney, Maciejewski and his wife Tricia now live in Shippensburg, where they raised their sons, Brady and the late Levi.
Dr. Charles E. Patterson, the president of Shippensburg University, praised Maciejewski, saying, “His leadership and commitment have left a mark on our program.” Meanwhile, Jeff Michaels, the athletic director, mentioned the importance of continuing Maciejewski’s legacy through the search for a new head coach who can nurture upcoming student-athletes.
