SEATTLE — Police in Seattle are investigating after shots were fired near the Yesler Community Center on Tuesday evening. This incident occurred while Mayor Katie Wilson was attending a community event with families and children.
Around 5:30 p.m., officers received calls about gunfire near 917 E. Yesler Way. Witnesses reported seeing three to four suspects flee in a dark sedan.
Mayor Wilson later addressed the situation, saying, “Shortly after announcing new investments in Seattle’s children and families, we heard gunfire. No one was harmed, but it’s a reminder of a harsh reality for many in our city. We cannot let this become normal.” She emphasized the need for continued investment in safety and community opportunities.
Police have not confirmed if the gunfire was aimed at a specific target or the building itself. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the gunfire did cause damage to property, including shattered glass doors.
Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes added, “Violence has no place in our community. Neighbors deserve to gather and celebrate without fear.” He emphasized that tackling gun violence requires a collaborative effort across the city.
Interestingly, a recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that gun violence remains a top concern for many Americans. In their study, 57% of participants reported feeling worried about gun violence in their communities, reflecting a growing sense of urgency around this issue.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. These events remind us of the importance of coming together to support one another and work on solutions for a safer community.
