This sudden decision raises eyebrows, especially considering the U.S. is co-hosting the World Cup starting June 11. Crocker’s departure is puzzling. He was instrumental in shaping the national teams, including decisions like hiring coaches and planning for future tournaments.
Alexi Lalas, a former U.S. player and current Fox analyst, described this move as an “own goal” for U.S. Soccer, saying it sends a confusing message just before the tournament. He noted that having a sporting director leave during such a crucial time is unusual in any sport.
Kasey Keller, another former player turned analyst, echoed these sentiments. He questioned the timing of Crocker’s departure, suggesting that there’s no immediate reason for him to leave when the focus should be on the upcoming World Cup.
In the interim, Dan Helfrich, the federation’s new chief operating officer, will oversee operations. He’ll work closely with Oguchi Onyewu, the assistant sporting director, and Tracey Kevins, who leads the women’s youth national team development.
Crocker, 51, joined U.S. Soccer in April 2023, after a stint at Southampton. His leadership influenced key decisions, including rehiring and later firing Gregg Berhalter as the men’s coach, as well as recommending Emma Hayes for the women’s team.
