Foodlink, Rochester’s largest food bank, is worried about the impact of these cuts but is determined to continue its mission. Mitch Gruber, Foodlink’s Chief Impact Officer, stressed that the organization is committed to serving the community, saying they are prepared to adapt. He noted that they expect state support to help fill the financial gaps, and the team is actively planning to maintain service levels.
These funding cuts will hit local farmers hard. Gruber highlighted the growing partnership between Foodlink and local farms, especially for dairy products. "Each year, we increase our purchases from local farms," he explained. This connection is vital for both the food bank and the farmers, who rely on these programs.
Foodlink distributes about 24 million pounds of food every year to approximately 150,000 people across ten counties in Western New York. With the potential for future cuts, especially to SNAP (formerly food stamps), Gruber voiced his concerns. "If SNAP benefits are reduced, it will be incredibly challenging for families and, in turn, for us to meet their needs," he said.
The effects of these cuts could extend beyond just Rochester. Gruber described it as an economic setback affecting agriculture and small businesses nationwide. "These decisions hurt our economy, and most importantly, they hurt those who need food assistance the most," he added.
