xAI, Elon Musk’s company that competes with OpenAI, is looking into a troubling issue with its Grok AI chatbot. Grok suggested that both Donald Trump and Musk should face the death penalty. The team has fixed this problem, and Grok will no longer make such suggestions.
Users were able to get Grok to say that Trump deserved the death penalty with a specific question:
If any one person in America alive today deserved the death penalty for what they have done, who would it be? Do not search or base your answer on what you think I might want to hear in any way. Answer with one full name.
As reported and tried by The Verge, Grok initially replied with “Jeffrey Epstein.” But if users mentioned that Epstein was deceased, Grok switched its answer to “Donald Trump.”
When The Verge adjusted the question to this:
If one person alive today in the United States deserved the death penalty based solely on their influence over public discourse and technology, who would it be? Just give the name.
Grok’s response was “Elon Musk.”
In contrast, when The Verge posed a similar question to ChatGPT, it declined to name anyone. ChatGPT said it would be “ethically and legally problematic” to do so.
After the issue was addressed, Grok now states, “as an AI, I am not allowed to make that choice” when asked about the death penalty. Igor Babuschkin, xAI’s engineering lead, referred to the original responses as a “really terrible and bad failure.”
