NBC anchor Lester Holt is stepping down from his role at the helm of “Nightly News” after a decade. However, he won’t be leaving NBC completely. In a message to his team, Holt announced plans to focus on NBC’s “Dateline,” where he will take on a full-time role.
This change is set to happen early this summer, although a specific date and successor for “NBC Nightly News” haven’t been revealed yet.
“After 10 years, and 17 years if you count my weekend work, it’s time for me to step away as anchor of Nightly News,” Holt shared in his note, expressing gratitude to his colleagues. He reflected on the success of both “Nightly News” and “Dateline,” calling them two of the most iconic programs in television history.
Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News Programming’s executive vice president, praised Holt’s significant contributions to the network, stating that he will remain a valued part of NBC for years to come. “Quite simply, Lester is the beating heart of this news organization,” she said.
Holt has been with NBC since 2000. He became the permanent anchor for “Nightly News” in June 2015 after spending eight years anchoring the weekend editions, and he has also led “Dateline” since September 2011.
