A woman in South Florida was shocked to find a cockroach in her meal at a busy mall food court. Bianca Gutierrez was enjoying bourbon chicken and noodles when she spotted something strange on her plate. What she thought might be a veggie turned out to be something much more unsettling.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” Gutierrez said. In a video she recorded, the roach, complete with legs and antennae, was clearly visible. “I was disgusted and really disappointed.”
The incident took place at Pembroke Lakes Mall, where Gutierrez bought her food from Kelly’s Cajun Grill. She didn’t wait long to react—she went straight back to the counter. The staff were just as shocked as she was. “They didn’t know what to say, just apologized,” she said.
Gutierrez received a refund and decided to escalate the issue. She sent her video to Local 10 News and filed a complaint with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. State inspectors acted quickly, coming to check the restaurant the very next day.
Their findings were alarming. The inspection revealed several health violations, including the presence of cockroaches on a preparation table. As a result, the restaurant was ordered to shut down temporarily.
A team from Local 10 News later visited the restaurant. A manager confirmed the shutdown but didn’t share more details. Attempts to reach the corporate office for comment went unanswered.
Gutierrez’s experience has made her rethink her eating habits. “For now, I’ll stick to cooking at home until I can move past this,” she said.
Such incidents aren’t isolated. According to a recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 76 million Americans get sick from foodborne illnesses each year. Many of these cases are linked to poor restaurant hygiene.
