Shocking Footage: Men Assault Woman in PNG University – What You Need to Know

Women’s rights advocates are outraged after a shocking incident on a university campus in Papua New Guinea. A young woman was attacked by a large group of men late at night at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in Lae.

In video footage, the woman walks with her hands over her ears, surrounded by jeering men. Although two security guards were with her, she suffered multiple assaults from the crowd as she fought back in desperation.

The university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Ora Renagi, condemned the mob behavior. He stated, “Mob behavior is unacceptable, harassment is a crime, and such actions will not be tolerated.” The university has launched an investigation and promised disciplinary action for those involved.

Interestingly, the woman was not a registered student at the university. Reports indicate that the conflict arose after she confronted a male student while attempting to enter a dormitory.

Papua New Guinean journalist Maureen Jane expressed her disgust, saying, “I’m sickened to the bone. I’m sickened to the core of my soul.” She highlights a broader issue of gender-based violence in the country, especially as it approaches its 50th anniversary of independence. Data reveals that around 70% of women in Papua New Guinea experience violence in their lifetime, raising urgent calls for action from leaders at all levels.

As discussions continue, the need for a cultural shift in attitudes toward women remains critical. Advocates like Maureen Jane urge collective effort, saying, “Women leaders, please come together to eradicate these barbaric acts.” It’s a moment for reflection and change, pushing society towards a safer future for women and girls.
