A group of thieves pulled off a stunning daylight robbery at a family-owned jewelry store in Seattle, stealing millions in just 90 seconds.
On August 14, around noon, the Seattle Police responded to the scene at Menashe and Sons Jeweler. Four masked individuals smashed the glass door using hammers and broke into six display cases. This daring heist was captured on surveillance cameras inside the shop.
According to reports, the suspects had a Taser and bear spray, which they aimed at store employees during the robbery. Thankfully, no one was injured. Bret Gibson, who works at a nearby gym, described how the sound of shattering glass echoed through his workplace. “It was loud—breaking glass and banging around,” he recounted.
After the robbery, the thieves fled in a getaway car. Despite police efforts to search the area, no suspects were found. The Seattle Police have asked anyone with information to contact their Violent Crimes Tip Line.
Josh Menashe, the store’s vice president, said the team is shaken up. He also mentioned that the store would remain closed for some time to deal with the aftermath, including assessing the stolen items. Notably, one showcase had between $700,000 and $800,000 in Rolex watches and another contained a $125,000 emerald necklace, alongside a platinum diamond. Other cases held a significant amount of gold jewelry.
This incident reflects a troubling trend in retail crime. According to a recent report from the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, thefts in stores have surged in major cities over the last few years, affecting both large chains and local shops. The rise in such crimes often correlates with increased social tensions and economic challenges; both factors that seem to be at play today.
As this bold robbery shows, small businesses are increasingly becoming targets. Experts stress the need for improved security measures, including better surveillance systems and staff training. The impact on the store isn’t just financial; it can also affect the community’s sense of safety.
In the days following the robbery, community members expressed their shock and support for the store, expressing their hope that operations would resume soon.
