During a recent Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Doha, an Australian couple faced a shocking situation. Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin were on their way to Venice when a woman collapsed in the aisle next to them. Tragically, she did not survive.
The couple shared their experience, describing how cabin crew placed the deceased woman’s body next to Mr. Ring, who had to sit beside her for the last four hours of the flight. Despite available seats, the staff did not offer him a chance to move. “They looked frustrated,” he recalled, “and then asked me to swap seats.” Ms. Colin was stunned when she heard where the woman would be placed.
As the flight continued, Mr. Ring noted that while the crew attempted to move her body to business class, they were unable to do so due to the size of the woman and the narrow aisle. After landing, ambulance personnel entered the plane to attend to the situation. “I couldn’t believe they told us to stay in our seats,” he said, still feeling the weight of that moment. Unfortunately, this couple has yet to receive any support or outreach from Qatar Airways or the agency that booked their flight.
Mr. Ring expressed his concern for passenger care. “They should check on us, see if we need support,” he stated. Similarly, Ms. Colin found the whole experience distressing. While understanding that the airline couldn’t be blamed for the woman’s death, she emphasized the need for proper protocols in such situations.
In a statement, Qatar Airways expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and acknowledged the distress caused by the incident. They are in the process of reaching out to affected passengers. A spokesperson for Qantas clarified that handling such onboard incidents is the responsibility of the airline operating the flight, in this case, Qatar Airways.
This unsettling experience highlights the importance of communication and support for passengers during unexpected and traumatic events. The couple believes that better protocols are needed to ensure passenger care in challenging situations like this one.
