During a recent episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart accidentally injured himself while expressing his frustrations about the pharmaceutical industry. He smashed a mug on his desk, causing shards to cut his hand.
In the opening monologue, Stewart took aim at President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk, criticizing their new initiative known as the Department of Government Efficiency (referred to as DOGE). Stewart joked about being “DOGE curious,” but he highlighted that the program unfairly targets ordinary workers and low-cost services while leaving major industries like oil and pharmaceuticals untouched.
He pointed out that these industries benefit from government subsidies yet charge consumers high prices for their products, developed with taxpayer funding. His passion for the topic led to the mug mishap; blood began to flow from his hand almost immediately.
After a brief assessment of his injury, Stewart decided he would need to go to the hospital. Throughout the rest of the segment, he kept his bleeding hand hidden, but towards the end, he reluctantly revealed it, prompting a collective gasp from the audience. “It’s fine!” he assured them, attempting to downplay the situation.
Later in the show, while chatting with Georgetown Law’s Rupa Bhattacharyya, Stewart cautiously kept his injured hand out of sight again. When it was briefly seen, it was bandaged but clearly still bleeding. He quipped, “Oh wow, this thing’s really coming out.”
Despite the chaos, Stewart kept his humor intact, later tweeting about the incident with a playful tone. He wrote, “We’re back! New Daily Show tonight! It’s a bloody good episode…emphasis on bloody…I’m an idiot…”
