Carly Webb Sentenced for Child Abuse in Virginia
A babysitter in Bedford County, Virginia, has been sentenced for abusing a young child. Carly Webb received a one-year jail term and will be on probation for three years.
The abuse reportedly occurred between October 2023 and January 2024 when the child was just 19 to 23 months old. Evidence presented during the trial showed distressing footage of Webb neglecting and physically mistreating the child.
Investigator Michelle Alderson testified that the child sometimes went up to 21 hours without food or water while in Webb’s care. On several days, the child was put to bed as early as 8 p.m. and not fed until after 4 p.m. the next day. In some instances, the toddler was left in a crib for up to nine hours.
Prosecutors highlighted that security footage revealed Webb discarding food and drinks prepared by the parents for the child. The jury found her guilty on multiple counts, including one count of felony child abuse and five misdemeanor counts of assault and battery.
Webb pleaded guilty to five of the seventeen charges against her, but a judge found her guilty on all counts in October 2025. While the total sentence amounted to nine years, she will only serve twelve months in jail.
During sentencing, both parents shared their heartbreak. The mother expressed feelings of betrayal, stating that she had considered Webb a close family friend. She described the situation as a nightmare from which she couldn’t awaken.
Child abuse remains a critical issue in society. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS), there were over 600,000 reported cases of child abuse in the U.S. in 2020 alone. These figures highlight the importance of vigilance and support for families to prevent similar occurrences.
