A young man from Baltimore, named Maurquise Emillo James, is facing serious charges after being accused of killing a millionaire philanthropist, Robert Fuller Jr., at a nursing home on Valentine’s Day. Fuller, 87, was found shot in the head at the Cogir senior living center in Potomac, Maryland.
James, who is 22 and worked night shifts as a medical technician at the facility, has been charged with first-degree murder and several other offenses, including attempted murder and felony assault. The police also reported that James fired at a Maryland state trooper during a traffic stop. Fortunately, the trooper was not seriously injured.
One of the most puzzling aspects of this case is the lack of a clear motive. Captain Sean Gagen from Montgomery County Police expressed confusion over the relationship between James and Fuller, stating that James claimed they had a good rapport and that he wouldn’t have harmed Fuller.
However, evidence from the investigation raises concerns. Police found wigs and a mask in James’s home, and surveillance footage from the nursing home showed a figure wearing a wig and a distinctive plaid jacket entering the building just before the murder. It seems more likely that the shooter was someone who had inside access, as the entrance was propped open and the alarm system was tampered with.
Investigators have found other strange behavior. On the night before the murder, James reportedly asked Fuller if the Oxycodone medication he gave him had “kicked in yet,” which his partner noted was odd behavior. This partner, who has not been named, expressed surprise that the sound of the gunfire did not wake them.
As police pieced together the timeline, they noted that a tip connected James to the surveillance footage due to his unique gait. Shortly after this revelation, James was seen lingering at the facility long after his shift should have ended. It all culminated in a high-tension traffic stop where he fired at the trooper before fleeing.
James is now being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, awaiting further legal proceedings.
