Wawa is shutting down its only fully digital convenience store located at Drexel University. This location, which opened in 2018 at 3300 Market St. in Philadelphia, announced its closure to the student-run newspaper The Triangle.

Lori Bruce, Wawa’s senior media relations manager, expressed gratitude for the support from the local community. She assured that all employees will have the chance to work at other Wawa locations.

The decision to close stems from ongoing challenges. Wawa tried to improve the store’s performance by collaborating with Drexel University and experimenting with a digital format. Customers could place orders through a mobile app or touchscreens, while in-store staff fulfilled the orders. Despite these efforts, the digital format didn’t lead to the expected improvements in customer experience.

Interestingly, the closure is part of a larger trend. Wawa has closed 12 locations in Philadelphia recently due to concerns over safety and security. The company is now focusing on expanding larger suburban stores, often with gas stations, as it grows nationwide.

This shift raises questions. Is the digital convenience store model too advanced for some locations? According to recent surveys, 60% of consumers still prefer face-to-face interactions when shopping for quick essentials. This highlights a possible gap between consumer preferences and innovative retail approaches.

Wawa’s commitment to testing new formats reflects its desire to stay relevant. They previously introduced drive-thrus and mobile order windows, showing their aim to enhance customer convenience.
