A recent survey across Indian cities found that 71% of people have felt the sting of severe heatwaves. This study, conducted by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and CVoter between December 2024 and February 2025, included over 10,700 participants. The results highlight how climate change is changing daily life in India, with extreme weather events, like heatwaves and floods, becoming more common.
Many respondents shared they had faced various challenges in the past year due to climate shifts. Marija Verner, a researcher, noted that beyond heatwaves, people reported issues like agricultural pests (60%), power outages (59%), water pollution (53%), and water shortages (52%).
The survey also revealed that many Indians are deeply worried about environmental issues. For instance, 61% expressed concern about the extinction of species, while other worries included droughts (58%) and severe air pollution (54%).
Jagadish Thaker, another researcher involved in the study, pointed out that 64% of those surveyed linked global warming to these extreme weather events. Many believe it’s causing significant ecological impacts, with 62% specifically worried about how it contributes to heatwaves.
Interestingly, while the majority of respondents are aware of these challenges, 32% had never even heard of the term "global warming." Jennifer Marlon emphasized the need for increased public awareness. Raising knowledge about climate change isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential for managing future risks and reducing carbon emissions.
Experts stress that climate change is not just an abstract issue. For many, it’s a part of everyday life. The patterns we see in the climate today can be traced back through history. For example, while heatwaves were once rare, they are now something many people in India face regularly, illustrating how quickly things can change.
With ongoing climate discussions, social media also plays a role. Many people share their experiences and frustrations online, creating a vibrant conversation about how these changes affect their lives. Engaging with communities through platforms like Twitter or Instagram allows individuals to voice their concerns and seek solutions.
As temperatures rise and extreme events multiply, it’s clear that addressing climate change is a pressing issue. Staying informed and sharing knowledge can empower communities to adapt and mitigate its impacts.
