On December 20, Bruno Valenzuela, 31, was watching over five-year-old Maverick Brower at the family’s home in Port Jefferson. Maverick, who has cerebral palsy and complex medical needs, requires special care.
That day, things took a troubling turn. While caring for Maverick, Valenzuela allegedly slapped him aggressively on the back and chest when the boy began coughing and crying, leaving visible bruises. The family noticed the injuries and took Maverick to Stony Brook University Hospital two days later to document what had happened.
On December 22, they filed a police report, leading the Suffolk County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit to launch an investigation. They provided surveillance footage from inside Maverick’s bedroom. The videos reportedly show Valenzuela striking and grabbing Maverick while the boy’s parents were away.
Valenzuela was arrested later that evening at his home in Brentwood. According to police, he was employed by Christian Nursing Registry in Smithtown, though the agency has not commented on the matter.
Police have charged Valenzuela with endangering the welfare of a child and of a physically disabled person. He is set to be arraigned soon.
This incident highlights a growing concern regarding the safety of vulnerable individuals in home care settings.
