In a surprising turn of events, freshman Rep. Christian Menefee triumphed over veteran Rep. Al Green in the Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ 18th Congressional District. This rare face-off happened due to Republican-led redistricting, which reshaped the political landscape.
Menefee garnered 46% of the primary vote, slightly edging out Green, who received 44%. Neither candidate secured a majority in the initial March 3 vote, prompting the runoff.
At just 38, Menefee made his congressional debut this year after winning a special election following the passing of Rep. Sylvester Turner. Green, at 78, chose to contest in the newly redrawn district after his original area, the 9th District, became more Republican-leaning.
This redistricting played a crucial role in elevating the stakes for both candidates. Green has long been a vocal critic of President Trump, pushing for his impeachment and even staging protests in Congress during Trump’s speeches. Menefee leveraged his past as Harris County attorney, highlighting lawsuits his office filed against the Trump administration.
Notably, Menefee also received substantial backing from a super PAC linked to the cryptocurrency world, which invested over $5 million in his campaign. Critics have raised concerns over such financing, with Menefee himself advocating for campaign finance reforms to limit the influence of super PACs.
This primary comes at a significant moment in U.S. politics. Historically, Texas has seen a steady increase in Democratic representation, even as the state remains pivotal for GOP ambitions. With two representatives from the district passing away over the last couple of years, stability has been a challenge. The legacy of representation in the 18th District dates back over 50 years, beginning with Barbara Jordan, the first Black woman elected from the South.
