Shocking Turn of Events: NYC Comptroller Brad Lander Arrested During Immigration Court Hearing

Brad Lander, New York City’s comptroller and mayoral candidate, was arrested by federal agents while visiting an immigration court. This incident happened as he was accompanying someone out of the courtroom. His campaign spokesperson confirmed the arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On that day, Lander was at 26 Federal Plaza to observe hearings involving individuals facing possible deportation. He mentioned to an AP reporter that his role was to support these immigrants. This was actually his third visit to the immigration court in a month.

Video footage shows Lander walking alongside an immigrant whose case was dismissed when he was suddenly approached by two masked agents. Despite Lander asserting he wasn’t obstructing anything and asking for a judicial warrant, the agents proceeded to pin him against a wall and handcuff him. The reasons for his arrest remain unclear.

Lander’s wife, Meg Barnette, took to social media shortly after, expressing concern and updating the public: “While escorting a defendant out of immigration court, Brad was taken by masked agents.” She emphasized how shocking the situation was and highlighted their ability to secure legal representation, a privilege not available to many in similar circumstances.

In a press conference, Barnette stated she was “extraordinarily proud” of her husband and labeled the arrest as unacceptable. She reflected on the rule of law and the disparities faced by many in the immigration system.

Reports indicated that multiple federal agencies were present at the court that day, including ICE and the FBI. The incident quickly gained traction on social media, with some political figures voicing strong criticism of the arrest.

Zohran Mamdani, another mayoral candidate, called the arrest “fascism,” urging New Yorkers to speak out. Others echoed similar sentiments, including Mehdi Hasan, who reacted by condemning the treatment of elected officials. Congressman Greg Casar emphasized Lander’s stance for basic rights, while State Senator Julia Salazar highlighted concerns regarding the conduct of ICE agents.

This event fits into a larger trend of increasing arrests by ICE, particularly outside immigration courts. A recent report highlighted an 807% rise in arrests of immigrants with no criminal history between January and June. Such statistics raise questions about the current administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.

Interestingly, Lander’s arrest shares similarities with another recent incident involving Senator Alex Padilla, who was forcibly removed while questioning a federal official about immigration policy. These events reveal deepening tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and the rights of individuals under such pressures.
