Gabriela Gonzalez, a 24-year-old social media influencer, is facing serious charges. She allegedly tried to arrange a hit on her ex-boyfriend Jack Avery, a member of the boy band Why Don’t We. This bizarre plot is reportedly tied to a custody dispute over their 7-year-old daughter.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Gonzalez has been charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. Her father, Francisco Gonzalez, and her then-boyfriend, Kai Cordrey, also face the same charges. District Attorney Nathan Hochman noted that this case highlights how far some people will go to resolve personal issues.
The FBI initiated the investigation, which was later taken over by local authorities. In an Instagram post, Avery expressed gratitude toward law enforcement and emphasized his focus on being a good father during this turmoil.
Prosecutors allege that between 2020 and 2021, Gonzalez sought Cordrey’s help to hire a hitman. Her father purportedly provided $10,000 to kick off the plan. Just two months later, he sent an additional $4,000 after the supposed hitman asked for more funds.
In September 2021, an undercover officer, posing as a hitman, engaged with Cordrey, who discussed the plot in detail, including confirmation that Avery was the target and how payment would be handled.
Gonzalez has over 450,000 followers on Instagram and is currently held in a Los Angeles detention center on a $2 million bond. Her attorney has not publicly commented on her case. Meanwhile, Francisco Gonzalez, who was arrested in Florida, awaits extradition and is also being held without clear legal representation. Cordrey was arrested recently and faces the same bond.
If convicted, all three could face life in prison.
The case sheds light on the growing issues surrounding mental health and conflict resolution in high-stakes situations. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, custody battles can escalate quickly, often leading to drastic decisions.
