A recent wave of arrests across the U.S. has highlighted the dangers of unlicensed dental care. In states like New Jersey, Florida, and Illinois, individuals have been accused of performing dental work without proper credentials, often resulting in serious complications for patients.
In New Jersey, a woman named Ana Amato faced charges after a root canal attempt left a patient in distress. After paying $1,000 for the procedure through a WhatsApp group, the patient ended up bleeding and needed medical help. This incident shows the risks people take seeking cheaper dental care without verifying qualifications.
In Florida, undercover officers arrested Karim Selene Cordova Rivera after a tooth extraction appointment at a home. Rivera had a dental license from Peru but was not licensed to practice in the U.S. She is facing multiple felony charges for her actions.
Meanwhile, in Illinois, two individuals were charged after a patient required hospitalization due to an infection following treatment in a private home. The patient paid $850 and later experienced complications that needed emergency care. Investigators found that neither suspect had any valid medical or dental licenses.
The problem of unlicensed dentistry isn’t confined to the U.S. A global survey by the FDI World Dental Federation indicated that 68.4% of national dental associations reported having no estimates of illegal dental practice in their countries. The lack of data makes it difficult to understand the full scope of this issue.
Recent statistics reveal that at least 11 cases of unlicensed dentists were documented in 2025 alone. Without a centralized national database, it’s challenging to track the prevalence of unlicensed practitioners. Most enforcement is based on state-level reports and actions.
The rise of “dental tourism” also contributes to this issue. While some patients seek affordable treatments abroad, they may unknowingly put their health at risk. According to the American Dental Association, patients should always research the credentials of practitioners, whether at home or abroad, to ensure their safety.
As individuals become more adventurous in seeking dental care, it’s essential to prioritize safety over cost. Understanding the potential dangers and recognizing the importance of professional credentials can go a long way in avoiding harmful outcomes.
