Shubhanshu Shukla: Elevating India’s Spirit and ‘Gajar Ka Halwa’ to New Heights in Space!

Today marks a historic moment for India. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has become the second Indian to venture beyond our planet. Speaking live from the International Space Station (ISS) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he delighted the nation.

As he orbited 400 kilometers above Earth, Captain Shukla described his awe at witnessing India from space. “When I saw India from up here, it felt much bigger than what the maps show,” he shared. This sentiment captured more than just geography—it was an emotional connection. From that height, there were no borders, just a vast land rich in culture and identity.

During their conversation, PM Modi praised Captain Shukla, highlighting his role as a beacon of hope and a symbol of new beginnings. “Your journey signifies the start of a new era,” he noted. He stated, “I never imagined I would travel to space, but under your leadership, we’ve learned to dream and achieve those dreams.”

Interestingly, aboard the ISS, Captain Shukla brought a taste of home with him—gajar ka halwa and aamras (mango pulp). Sharing Indian hospitality in space, he chuckled, “It’s not just a dish; it carries memories of home.” His fellow astronauts from the US, Poland, and Hungary got a taste of Indian culture 400 kilometers above Earth.

PM Modi reminded him of the responsibility that came with this adventure. “Your journey will inspire many. Your experiences will guide India’s future space missions, like Gaganyaan and our aspirations for lunar exploration,” he said.

Captain Shukla also spoke candidly about life in zero gravity. “Sleeping in space is quite the challenge. Here, everything feels different,” he admitted. Even with extensive training, nothing could truly prepare him for the experience of weightlessness.
