A former player from the Sicamous Eagles is taking his hockey talent to the United States. Ashton Gallagher has committed to join Roger Williams University (RWU) in Rhode Island for the upcoming season.
On June 9, the KIJHL announced this exciting news. Gallagher, who played as a forward for the Eagles during the 2024/25 season, is set to skate with the RWU Hawks in the NCAA this fall.
“I’m really excited to start in Rhode Island,” Gallagher shared in a media release. “It’s a fantastic chance to continue my education while playing hockey. Being part of a new Division III program means we can build a winning culture early on.”
In his season with the Eagles, Gallagher showcased his skills, scoring seven goals and six assists in 20 regular season games, along with two points in three playoff matches. His time in the KIJHL helped him enhance his offensive play, especially his scoring abilities. Coaches relied on him in critical game moments.
“Ashton is dynamic and has great scoring potential,” said Benjamin Marshall, an assistant coach with the Eagles. “He plays a complete game and is a fantastic teammate.”
At just 20 years old, Gallagher transitioned to the Eagles after spending a season with the OCN Blizzard in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He credits his time in Sicamous for helping him reach this next step.
“Sicamous opened doors for me,” he said. “I received excellent support from my coaches and teammates, which made my season both successful and memorable.”
Gallagher’s journey echoes a growing trend in sports where athletes transition from junior leagues to collegiate play. This shift not only advances their athletic careers but also emphasizes the importance of education.
A recent survey by the NCAA highlighted that athletes who engage in sports while pursuing their degrees often perform better academically. This balance can lead to improved job prospects after graduation.
As Gallagher embarks on this new chapter, his story reflects a broader narrative in sports: the merging of education and athletics can pave the way for future success.
