Holidays should be joyful times for connection and celebration. But for many, intrusive thoughts about food can overshadow these moments. This phenomenon, often called “food noise,” makes it hard to focus on enjoying time with loved ones.
Jennifer Barnoud, from University Health Services, explains, “Many holidays revolve around food. It carries emotional weight and creates connections.” Whether it’s the special dishes on the table or the endless advertisements for festive snacks, food is everywhere. For those struggling with embracing their bodies or managing their eating habits, the holidays can become a battleground of thoughts and emotions.
Nursing professor Gayle Timmerman points out that restrictive eating during this time can lead to feelings of deprivation. “When you tell yourself you can’t eat something, it can turn into an obsession,” she says. This often results in anxiety and guilt, making gatherings less enjoyable.
Eating balanced meals throughout the day can help diminish these intrusive thoughts. Instead of saving up calories for big holiday meals, fueling your body can make it easier to enjoy treats in moderation. It’s essential to remind ourselves that holidays aren’t just about the food; they’re about spending quality time with family, exchanging gifts, and sharing laughter.
The idea isn’t to ignore food entirely—it’s an important part of our celebrations. Instead, it’s about finding peace with our choices. Mallary Tenore Tarpley, who teaches journalism and authored SLIP: Life in the Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery, suggests reframing food as a source of fun. “I enjoy cooking with my kids. We look through recipe books together, and that joyful process really helps take the pressure off,” she shares.
For many, including myself, food noise heightens during the holidays. I love baking and sharing treats, yet I often find myself stressing over how to fit them into my dietary plan. My approach has been to remember that one day won’t ruin my health. Food is not just fuel; it’s a means of connection and celebration.
This season, let’s strive for balance. Allow yourself to savor the moments and the food without guilt. Food is meant to bring us together, not create distance. Embrace the joy of sharing meals, and give yourself permission to enjoy every bite.
