Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: Great question! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in many parts of the world. It covers a range of issues, such as coronary artery disease, which happens when the blood vessels to the heart get blocked. We also have heart failure, where the heart doesn’t pump effectively enough. Then there are heart rhythm problems and a few other conditions.

Courtney: What’s one of the first steps someone can take to improve their heart health?

Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: The first step is to see a doctor. It’s surprising how many people, even in their 50s and 60s, have never had a check-up. Regular visits can help catch any issues early on.

Courtney: When should someone start focusing on their heart health?

Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: It’s never too early! Parents should keep an eye on their kids’ heart health too. Evidence shows that issues can start as early as their late teens or early twenties. Knowing your numbers, like blood pressure, is key to staying healthy down the line. High blood pressure silently affects your health, increasing the risk of heart disease and other conditions over years.

Courtney: What lifestyle changes can help with heart health?

Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: There are several! Diet is crucial. Focusing on whole foods and reducing processed carbs can help manage insulin levels and reduce inflammation. When you eat high-sugar foods, your insulin spikes, which can lead to long-term health issues.

Courtney: I’ve heard the tip to “shop the perimeter” of the grocery store. Is that solid advice?

Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: Absolutely! Stick to fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Foods like spinach, broccoli, and berries are stellar for heart health. And pay attention to added sugars in items like snack bars and drinks—those can sneak up on you!

Courtney: What key lifestyle factors should we focus on for heart health?

Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: Sleep is vital! Getting at least eight hours can significantly lower the risk of heart disease. It’s easy to underestimate how crucial sleep is for overall health.

Courtney: That’s a great point! How does exercise fit into all this?

Dr. Emmanuel Moustakakis: Regular exercise is one of the best ways to boost heart health. It can improve cholesterol levels significantly. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. This could include brisk walking or swimming. Plus, resistance training, like bodyweight exercises, can be very effective too.
