Simpson University Welcomes New Students: A Thriving Community of Athletes and Scholars

REDDING, Calif. — The excitement is palpable as Welcome Weekend kicks off at Simpson University. New students and their families are arriving, filled with anticipation and a bit of nervousness.

This year, the university is buzzing with approximately 750 undergraduate students, with around 70% involved in athletics. Brian Dawson, Vice President of Student Development, noted the growth in sports programs. “Students are eager to come here and play,” he shared.

As part of Welcome Weekend, new students dive into orientation activities designed to ease their transition into college life. Brandon Hall, a former student now working at the university, emphasized how crucial this time is for forming bonds. “This is a fantastic time for them to connect. They get to see the community we have here,” he said. Many students, like Hall, make lifelong friends during these formative days.

The dorms are alive with activity as parents help their kids settle in. Among the newcomers is Dani Flack, who transferred from Texas A&M. She chose Simpson for the warm environment. “The campus vibe made me feel complete, something I needed,” she expressed.

Another new student, Jacob Cumming, feels that fate brought him to Simpson after he missed his flight to Grand Canyon University. Encouraged by friend Noah Bryerton, he decided to explore Simpson instead. “I called him upset about my flight, and he said, ‘Hey, check out Simpson University,'” he recalled.

Welcome Weekend is packed with opportunities for newcomers to find their place within the Simpson community. Research shows that such orientations are vital; studies indicate that strong connections made early in college can enhance student retention and satisfaction. In fact, a recent survey found that 82% of students who participate in orientation programs feel more connected to their institution.

This vibrant weekend is not just a transition; it is the start of new relationships and memorable experiences. As students engage in activities and explore campus life, they lay the groundwork for lasting friendships and a supportive community.

The Welcome Weekend activities extend through Sunday, filled with chances for students to immerse themselves fully in everything Simpson has to offer.
