Sinclair Community College Receives $900K Grant from U.S. Department of Education to Launch Student Resilience Center

DAYTON, OH – Sinclair Community College is excited to announce a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This funding will help create a new Student Resilience Center aimed at supporting students facing mental health challenges and basic needs insecurity.

The grant is part of the “Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program,” which helps colleges improve resources for students’ essential needs.

Dr. Lorrie Spivey, the Program Director, shared her enthusiasm: “This grant allows us to enhance our services and support our students better. We aim to empower them by fostering resilience and providing essential resources.”

Over the next three years, this grant will boost Sinclair’s Accessibility Services Department. It will enhance current student support programs, including education counseling and peer support groups, while raising awareness of mental health resources available both on and off campus.

With additional counseling staff, the college can help students more effectively. Early identification of student needs can lead to better outcomes, reducing obstacles that might hinder their academic journey.
