Sindh Launches NDC 3.0: A Bold Step Forward in the Fight Against Climate Change

Advisor to the Chief Minister on Environment, Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, announced that Sindh has set its climate goals according to the United Nations’ Paris Agreement. The province plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. They aim to achieve this with 15% of the funds coming from provincial resources and 35% from international support.

Zubair Ahmed Channa, Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development, highlighted that the new policy outlines a clear action plan for key areas like energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, water, waste management, and urban infrastructure.

Key projects include:

• Expanding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
• Phasing out diesel vehicles.
• Promoting electric transport.
• Initiating large tree planting and mangrove restoration efforts.

These initiatives are expected to enhance air quality and generate new jobs.

Channa also mentioned plans for major reforms in waste management. These will focus on recycling, composting, and transforming waste into energy. Further, the policy aims to promote water conservation through improved water use and wastewater treatment, ensuring sustainable water resources for both urban and rural communities.

To tackle deforestation, Sindh plans to boost forest cover by 150% and protect 100,000 hectares as forest reserves. The government will introduce climate-resilient seeds and modern agricultural techniques to support local farmers.

Channa affirmed that the Chief Minister has approved the NDC 3.0 policy and has recommended Sindh’s priorities to the Federal Ministry of Climate Change to ensure they’re included in the national climate strategy.

In recent years, climate change awareness has grown, with many residents engaging in discussions online. Social media trends show increased support for environmental initiatives, reflecting a collective push for a greener future. According to a recent survey by Gallup, 70% of Pakistanis are concerned about climate change, indicating a strong desire for action.
