Sjoerd Marijne Returns as Coach of Indian Women’s Hockey Team
Sjoerd Marijne is back as the head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, as confirmed by Hockey India. After stepping away for four years, he returns with new energy and a plan for improvement.
Marijne previously coached the team from 2017 to 2021. Under his guidance, they achieved a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, marking a high point for Indian women’s hockey. He also led the team to the top 10 in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) rankings.
At 51, Marijne takes over from Harendra Singh, who left the role last month after the team missed qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Before Singh, Janneke Schopman, a two-time Olympic medalist, also stepped down.
Marijne expressed enthusiasm about his return: “After four and a half years, I come back with fresh energy and a clear vision to support the team’s growth.”
In addition to Marijne, the coaching staff includes Matias Vila from Argentina, serving as the analytical coach. Vila has a rich history in hockey, having played in two Olympics. Dr. Wayne Lombard will also join as the scientific advisor, aiming to enhance athletic performance.
With the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers coming up from March 8 to 14 in Hyderabad, Marijne’s leadership will be crucial. Team fitness will be prioritized, a key aspect that contributed to their Olympic success, according to Hockey India president Dr. Dilip Tirkey.
During his first tenure, Marijne guided India to significant achievements, including a semi-finals appearance in the 2017 Hockey World League and silver at both the 2018 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy and the Asian Games in Jakarta.
Social media reactions to Marijne’s return have been positive. Fans hope to see the team back on the global stage, building on past successes and moving forward with renewed vigor.
The upcoming qualifiers provide a chance for the team to show its growth and determination. With an experienced coach and focused training, the future looks promising.
