Guitar legend Slash, known for his time with Guns N’ Roses, is stepping into the film world. He’s producing a new version of the 1983 cult classic Deathstalker. The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where Slash shared his excitement about this project.
Slash’s connection to Deathstalker runs deep. He recalls watching it repeatedly while working at Tower Video. “It was a popular popcorn flick,” he says with a smile. He began producing films a few years ago and teamed up with Canadian producers for this project. They brought him the opportunity to revive this movie, and he jumped at the chance.
Director Steve Kostanski, known for films like The Void and Psycho Goreman, is also on board. Their shared vision focuses on practical effects rather than CGI, which Slash prefers. “I knew he could elevate the film,” Slash explains.
Beyond Deathstalker, other fantasy films like Krull and Conan the Barbarian inspired Slash. He loves how Deathstalker mixes humor and adventure. “It’s not just a remake but a fresh take,” he adds. The casting of Daniel Bernhardt as the hero excited him, as Bernhardt captures the essence of the character perfectly.
Slash’s love for horror cinema started at an early age, fueled by British Hammer films and James Bond classics. He credits these influences for shaping his musical career. The connection between film scores and rock music is something he values. “Movie music speaks to me differently than rock,” he shares.
Interestingly, according to a recent survey by Pew Research, the nostalgia for classic films is growing. About 60% of respondents stated they enjoy revisiting childhood favorites. This trend shows a renewed interest in both old classics and their revamped versions.
As Slash embarks on this cinematic journey, he’s eager to combine his love for music and film. Deathstalker is set for release in the US this October, promising fans a blend of nostalgia and fresh creativity.
